LEHIGHTON -- A community in Carbon County has an interesting way to celebrate an anniversary.

Next year, Lehighton turns 150 years old and to commemorate the birthday, a community group plans to plant 150 trees.

People who live in Lehighton say the streets used to be lined with trees, but not anymore. But with a big birthday coming up in the community, one group wants to bring those trees back.

"It's a no-brainer. Let's plant 150 trees."

Lehighton Shade Tree Commission wants to celebrate 150 years in the borough by planting just as many trees.

Ken Leffler came up with the idea after he planted a tree in memory of his brother.

"I loved my brother and it was a good way to memorialize him."

It's no simple task to plant all those trees though. The group usually plants about 10 a year, but they got a grant for this project which will help.

So now they want people to join in, too. The group wants people to plant trees for any reason they want: something to remember the past, but to also watch as the future grows.

There are some different varieties to choose from.

"We have Cleveland pear, we've planted quite a few of those. We'll be looking at locust. We'll be looking at oak in the proper areas of course," said Mark Hoffman of Lehighton.

Bonnie Kanauss handed the commission a $50 check for the tree in memory of her husband.

"I thought it would be good to honor my husband Dale," Kanauss said. "Because it's something that will be remembered and cherished."

The group is still looking for donations and for people who want trees on their yard.

The 150th tree will be planted on Lehighton's 150th birthday, which is in June.
