HANOVER TOWNSHIP -- A man was killed by a hit and run driver near Wilkes-Barre over the weekend, and Tuesday his mom shared her grief as well as her plea for the driver to come forward.

Police say Joey Coleman was killed along Main Road in Hanover Township. The coroner ruled it a homicide, and now a memorial marks where the hit and run happened. It's about a half mile away from his home, where he was heading to early Saturday after leaving a friend's house.

Now, his family still wishes he could come home.

"My son loved to play basketball, loved the Miami Dolphins, and most of all, loved to play his guitar he got for Christmas,” said Barbara Coleman, his mom.

Clutching a t-shirt of her late son, Coleman painfully shared some photos and some memories of him, too.  She says Joey was the kind of kid any mother would be proud of.

“He loved his family, his brothers and his sisters were his world. He was like a second father to them. This has been so devastating for our entire family,” Coleman said.

Coleman, 21, left behind two brothers and two sisters after he was killed Saturday. Police say he was walking home from a friend's house along Main Road in Hanover Township, when a vehicle hit him, and then took off.

“To leave him on the road and to discard him like his life meant nothing is the hardest part to deal with,” Coleman said. “Even if it was an accident and I know they didn't mean to hit him, please just come forward and tell us the truth, so we can go on and have some closure."

The family is now making funeral arrangements for Joey. Police haven't yet said if they have any suspects and haven't released a vehicle description that may have been involved in the deadly hit and run. They ask if you know anything, to call them.
