EAST STROUDSBURG -- Campus living is a little cramped at East Stroudsburg University. Hundreds of freshmen moving in Thursday found themselves being assigned to rooms of three instead of two. The university said it had notified those students ahead of time that they would have more than one roommate.

Bins are packed to the max with bedding, books, and clothes as freshmen move onto campus at East Stroudsburg University.

"It was a little stressful, but now that I'm here I'm glad it's over with. I'm just ready to move in,” said Jazmin Washington a freshman from Philadelphia.

ESU is bursting at the seams for the fall semester.

"Currently right now we're at 1,338 freshmen; that is perhaps the second largest freshman class in the history of the school,” said director of admissions Jeff Jones.

About 2,900 students total are living on campus, so a housing solution was needed.

"We had to temporarily triple some freshmen to accommodate everyone in order to accommodate everyone that wanted housing,” said associate director of residence life and housing David Campbell.

Freshman Jazmin Washington of Philadelphia says she is waiting for her third roommate to move in so they can figure out closet space, not knowing just how they’ll make it all fit.

"We have to figure that out when she gets here because we don't want to touch any of her things without her being here,” said Washington.

There are financial advantages to living in a triple dorm room. University officials tell us students living in tight quarters get a $50 dollar rebate per week.

Freshman Tyler Philips says he doesn’t mind being tripled up in Lenape Hall. He moved in in about 20 minutes.

"It's fine, it's fine. The guys are cool, so it's all good,” said Philips.

Residence Life says it will move students out of triple room assignments as space becomes available.

But some like Steven Robak say they aren’t in any rush.

"I actually like it a lot. It's exciting you meet new people too right off the bat. It should be fun,” said Robak.
