SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT -- Tarps covered the fields at Volunteer and Lamade Stadiums as rain poured down on the Little League Complex in South Williamsport. Even though all four of the opening day games were postponed, the teams still got in some baseball, in the form of batting practice.
"I was hoping it would be sunny so we could play," Blake Cavill said.
Blake Cavill is on the team from Sydney, Australia. He and most of the other players got batting practice in, because the batting cages are covered. Even so, the kids say they don't want to just practice.
"I think all the boys would love to play out there. It's the greatest experience of our lives," Cavill said.
Spectators were also disappointed.
"We heard the weather last night and it said late afternoon showers so we said okay we can at least make the opening ceremonies and one game," Carol Fox said.
Corinne Currie and her family from Mountain Top had the same idea.
"We came early this morning to save seats over there for the 1 p.m. game and the kids wanted to do a lot of the activities over there," Currie said.
People made the most of the rain outside to come inside at one of Little League's gift shops to do their shopping.
"Uhhh lots of people had the same idea. The lines are usually really long here but this is extremely long," Currie said
The rain is not only bad news for the players and spectators. The food stands are run by volunteers. David Cantine says Northumberland Christian School depends on the money raised at Little League, and because of the rain, the organization won't raise as much.
"We're certainly not seeing the kind of crowds that we have other times that we've done this kind of fundraiser. So there is I would say a fraction of the people we normally see come through," Cantine said.
Hopefully Mother Nature is finished because there is a full schedule Friday at the Little League World Series. Eight games are scheduled with the first one set for 10 a.m.
