DELAWARE WATER GAP -- Search and rescue crews in Monroe County were on the Delaware River for hours looking for a missing swimmer.

The National Park Service confirms a 26-year-old man from Queens, New York is missing after he reportedly went under the water while swimming with friends around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

His friend, who tried to help, had to be rescued from the river. Kayakers threw that man a life jacket and he was able to get out of the river on his own.

"A second individual was assisted by other boaters that were on the river and was thrown a life jacket and that more likely than not saved his life," said Joe Heinkes, an emergency supervisor with the National Park Service.

The efforts were called off for the evening around 7 p.m. expected to resume Wednesday. When the search resumes, it will be a recovery effort.

The names of the two men have not been released.
