OLD FORGE -- Family and friends are mourning a high school student after she was killed in a crash overnight, as investigators recreate the wreck trying to determine what happened.

The teenager from Scranton died after the truck she was riding in slammed into some trees in Old Forge. Now friends are left mourning the young life lost.

Friends of the young woman who lost her life on Sibley Avenue have been visiting the crash scene trying to make sense of the loss.

The squeal of tires on pavement could be heard as a reconstruction unit from the Pennsylvania State Police slammed the brakes, trying to determine what led up to deadly crash on Sibley Avenue in Old Forge late Sunday night.

Authorities said Mackenzie Evanusa, 18, of Scranton was killed when the driver of the truck she was riding in, Corey Uhrin, 21, lost control and slammed into the woods.

"The vehicle is coming west on Sibley Avenue and loses control on the turn, travels into the trees and rolls over, pinning the female in the vehicle against the tree," explained Old Forge Police Chief Jason Dubernas.

The crash also injured a teenage passenger in the back seat who underwent surgery on his leg.

Police said the driver told them the trio was just out for a ride.

While troopers have not said exactly how fast that truck was going, the impact took out at least half a dozen trees.

The loss is being keenly felt at Cosmo's Cheesesteaks in Scranton where the victim worked.

Her boss says Mackenzie loved her job so much that she stopped by on her days off.

"Happy, happy," said Cosmo Salerno, her boss. "She was just a happy girl."

Later in the day, friends arrived at the scene to grieve.

A former teacher, now superintendent of the Riverside School District, came to the scene to share his memories.

"When you have a kid like Mackenzie who is involved with so many friends, it is a tough day for everyone," said Superintendent Paul Brennan.

Sibley Avenue marks the boundary between Old Forge and Taylor. For longtime residents of the area, this crash brings back memories of another wreck.

In September of 1991, three young girls were killed when the car they were in flew off a bump in the road.

"They lost all three kids," recalled Maryann Bednarz. "They do travel very fast on this road. Everyone seems to think it is a road where nobody is looking."

Evanusa was supposed to start her senior year at Scranton High School in just a few weeks.

No charges have been filed in this case, but prosecutors say the truck has been impounded as the investigation continues.
