PALMERTON -- The 16th annual Carbon County fair kicked off in Palmerton Monday night.

There was dancing, bull riding, and more as hundreds flocked to the fairgrounds.

"It's a perfect little, local fair. It's a lot of fun. There's tons of things to keep everybody occupied, a little bit for everyone,” said Sarah Papenhausen. She and her family traveled from their Jim Thorpe home to enjoy the fair for the first time.

There were games, too, for kids big and small and rides, some fast and some a little more slow.

There are plenty of food vendors as well, selling everything from hot dogs and hamburgers to fried Oreos.

"The Smitty's french fries and the chicken fingers,” said Matt Kochen of Lehighton.

"The food is not helping my diet any, but it's great. Just made our way down the main entrance. I don't know, it's just such a nice family feeling, just walking in,” said June Piola of Jim Thorpe.

“We have been here every year the fair has been here, in this same spot and we're serving the same type of food every year. We enjoy it. It's in our blood. The money we make, we give away. It goes back into the community,” said Jean Smith of Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club, who was serving food to raise money for the organization.

The Carbon County fair runs through Saturday, August 8 at the fairgrounds in Palmerton.
