SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Animal shelters are always in need of people to adopt or foster pets and that need is growing greater for a shelter in Lackawanna County preparing for renovations.
With hundreds of animals still at the facility, Griffin Pond Animal Shelter is asking the community for help.
The shelter near Clarks Summit is preparing for a big makeover. The sound of barking dogs will be drowned out by the sound of power tools.
"The target aim is around early September," said Victoria Odynsky, Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.
Folks at the shelter say renovations will provide more space not only for the animals but also all the necessary supplies.
Before that work can begin, a bigger job needs to be tackled. The animals inside need other temporary homes.
Odynsky added, "We are going to need a lot of our animals moving out of the building while we do so. We are working with a variety of different rescues and kennels and things like that, but they can't take all of our dogs."
People at the shelter say dozens of animals come in each day. With work slated to begin soon, time is running out.
Now the shelter is turning to the community hoping folks will foster some of the animals while the work is being done.
Dogs like Coco are going to need someplace to go. Some former foster parents we spoke to say sometimes when you foster it could lead to a forever home.
"There is not going to be room and the noise is going to be crazy. The poor dogs. It's very important to do something now. I wish I had room for a few myself," said Barb Pramick of South Abington Township.
She lives near the shelter and says crating animals in a shelter makes it difficult for them to adapt to other environments. So fostering counteracts that problem.
"It's harder for them. They don't get out as much. They need exercise. They need special food and they need attention," Pramick added.
