PENN FOREST TOWNSHIP-- Officials say Stephen Pruiksma and his wife Diane were on the way to Pocono Raceway to pick up their grandson, when their van slammed into a tree on Behrens Road.

The deadly crash was called in just after midnight and took place a short drive from the couple's home.

Troopers say Stephen was at the wheel of the van which was headed east on Broad Mountain View Road. When the vehicle reached the intersection, it traveled across Behrens Road and hit a tree. Neither Diane, 74, nor Stephen, 75, was wearing a seat belt.

The couple lived in a section of Penn Forest Township popular with retirees.

Chris Moscaritolo makes a living repairing their golf carts and lives across the street from the scene of the crash.

He said, "There were no skid marks or anything."

Neighbors Brian and Nancy Hughes say Stephen once worked at Daytona Speedway and loved to talk about racing. Diane loved to have lunch with other women in the neighborhood.

Nancy Hughes said, "I know them quite well, there's a few of us women who got together and have lunches, and she would join us, very nice couple, very nice couple."

State Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

The Carbon County coroner says autopsies are not planned.
