SCRANTON -- Children in Scranton got a chance to meet those who protect and serve their community.

Kids were invited to the Mall at Steamtown Friday to "meet their local everyday hero."

Scranton police and firefighters, Pennsylvania Ambulance, and the American Red Cross were on hand for the kids to meet and experience the different emergency vehicles.

Officials participating say the event helps kids feel more comfortable in the event of an emergency.

"The biggest thing for us as EMS providers, as public safety providers, is to just to make sure that the children know that it's okay that if their loved one, or someone, or themselves, have to go into an ambulance that we're going to take good care of them," said Mike Mccormick with Pennsylvania Ambulance.

Kids could also interact with the American Red Cross mascot "Ernie the Emergency Response Vehicle," a mini truck that talks.
