FORTY FORT -- The Forty Fort Police Department's headquarters in Luzerne County hasn't been renovated in 40 years, but now it's getting a facelift.
The police department is gutted right now. It's being redone and it comes at a time when safety at the police department is been a big concern, especially after someone tried breaking into the station last month.
Alarming security video shows a man pounding on two sliding glass windows at the police department in June, causing one to crack and fall. He then sprawled himself across the counter.
The window has since been replaced with a piece of plywood, something the chief says is a safety problem.
"The first thing I realized was the security issue by this monstrosity behind us here," said Forty Fort Police Chief Dan Hunsinger.
Now the Forty Fort Police Department is making the front more secure and renovating the rest of the police station, thanks to more than $115,000 it received from two grants, including state casino money.
"If it wasn't for that, we would be out of luck because small police departments like ours, really, there's no grants out there for us," Hunsinger said.
Hunsinger said he has a background in construction and except for the wiring and the floor, he says he and his officers are doing all the work themselves.
"Yeah, if we had to pay a contractor for all of this, there's no way that we would be able to do it."
"It's something that's needed. It's a safety issue for everybody involved," said Officer William Stone.
People in Forty Fort are looking forward to seeing that safety issue improved.
"The fact that they're gonna save taxpayers money, I think is great, that the officers are willing to do the work themselves," said Marilyn Reich of Forty Fort.
"These guys do a fine job. They're always patrolling, making sure we're safe here, especially here at the Dunkin' Donuts. They're always around, so it think they do great," said Luis Rosario, who works at Dunkin' Donuts in Forty Fort.
Hunsinger is hoping to complete the renovations in about a month.
