WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- A home explosion in Wyoming County has been ruled an accident. Fire officials blame a propane tank.

It was just before 4 a.m. Tuesday when crews were called to a home near Tunkhannock for an explosion.

The blast ruined the home and people who heard it say it sounded like thunder.

A few beams are all that now hold up the home on Vosburg Road near Tunkhannock after an explosion caused much of the house to crumble.

It woke Brenda Grabowski who was staying at a campground across the road.

"I was sleeping and I thought it was a thunderstorm. It shook the whole camper and I thought, 'What the heck is that?' I jumped up and waited for some more and heard nothing after that," Grabowski said.

A state police fire marshal said propane exploded. The reason why is still under investigation.

Right now, the house is too unstable for anyone to go inside.

A man who lives in the house was able to get out safely. His wife was not there.

"I'm glad no one was hurt. Definitely crazy," Grabowski added.

Officials said when they arrived, they found tons of debris on the road, including glass and some other materials that were thrown from the house. They said some pieces were as far as 200 feet away.

Max Hardy lives just down the road from where the explosion happened. He said he was asleep and didn't hear the blast. When he woke up later he was surprised to see what had happened.

"I went up there and then my mom came home," said Hardy. "And she was like she woke up from our house shaking. She thought a tree fell on it."

Investigators hope to get a better look inside the home within the next few days. They are just waiting on the insurance company and contractors.

The couple who lived inside the home will be staying with family and friends.
