RICKETTS GLEN STATE PARK -- Crews from Luzerne, Columbia, and Sullivan County were on hand Sunday to help rescue a man who tripped and fell from a slippery trail at Ricketts Glen State Park.

According to firefighters, the man has an injured leg. According to park rangers, he was walking along a dirt trail at the park when he lost his footing and fell more than 10 feet.

Rangers add that things could have been a lot worse. The man would have fallen much farther if it were not for two branches that stopped his fall.

Firefighters say the trail where he fell was quite remote, making it difficult to get the necessary equipment out to him. They were able to get a utility task vehicle and a rescue basket out to him.

Crews told Newswatch 16 that the recent rain has made the trails muddier. They add that they hope people take this as an opportunity to think twice and plan ahead for when they go for a hike.

"Make sure they're wearing the right shoes. A lot of people are up here in flip flops and sneakers and you really need a pair of hiking boots to walk the falls especially with how wet it's been. It gets pretty muddy and slippery," said Deputy Chief Stan Davis, Sweet Valley Fire Department.
