RUSH TOWNSHIP -- The National Weather Service determined a tornado touched down Tuesday night in Northumberland County. It did not damage any houses, but it uprooted trees, destroyed a shed, and damaged a car.

Meteorologists from the NWS wrapped up their assessment outside a home on Moser Road near Riverside Wednesday afternoon. They determined that around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, a tornado ripped through the area with winds of up to 100 miles an hour.

Leanne McCormick was sitting inside her home near Riverside when she heard loud wind and rain. She says it came all of a sudden.

"Sounded like a train coming through my yard and I went, 'Uh-oh,' because I've always heard when a tornado comes through, it sounds like a train."

Her house was not damaged, but outside is a different story. Trees blew over, part of the roof on a barn was ripped off, and a piece of wood went through her car.

McCormick describes the noise as cannon shots.

"We just saw a cloud dissipating."

McCormick says there used to be a shed in her yard, but now all that's left of that shed is across the street in a field.

"My kids had a trampoline out back and it actually picked up the trampoline and tossed it," said Ashleigh Sutherland, McCormick's daughter.

Sutherland lives down the road. The family looked on as the National Weather Service inspected the damage on her mother's property. They determined it was done by an EF-1 tornado with winds up to 100 miles an hour.

"When I saw everything -- I grew up here -- and when I saw what it had done to the property, it just broke my heart," McCormick said.

"Just like my mom, I grew up here. I stayed a lot with my grandmother so I actually grew up on this property, too. Just to see it all torn apart is, I don't know," Sutherland added.

McCormick does not have homeowner's insurance so she says she doesn't know what she will do about the damage.
