TAMAQUA -- People in Tamaqua said a pool off Catawissa Road used to be a mud hole back in the 1930s and it looks like the space is reverting back to its old ways.

Tamaqua Councilman Justin Startzel took video of H.D. Buehler Memorial Bungalow Pool when the storm hit Schuylkill County. Instead of the pool filling up with rain water, it filled with mud and tons of runoff from the mountain.

"I can't believe how much dirt is actually from the mountain," said Emily Bumbulski.

Bumbulski is a lifeguard at the pool. She came by after the storm to check out the damage.

"We drove by last night and we saw it and we were just shocked. We couldn't believe it."

Borough officials estimate that there were 400,000 gallons of mud in this pool and pool employees are now cleaning it up.

"Picking up leaves, I was power washing before, shoveling, raking," said Bumbulski.

Borough officials said it's not the first time the pool had to be drained and cleaned up after a nasty storm.

Rob Jones, the director of the Tamaqua Department of Public Works said, "Compared to 2006 this is a cake walk."

Because of the clean up, the pool will be closed on Fourth of July.

After a rainy June, there are not too many opportunities left for the kids to swim.

"They only have a couple of more weeks before they'll be back in school," said Joseph Macalush of Tamaqua.

Pool and borough employees are making progress and hope to open soon.

"Long shot is to open Sunday," said Jones.

In the meantime, people with pool passes for the Tamaqua pool can use them at Lansford Community Pool through the weekend.
