WILKES-BARRE -- "There has never been another french fry that tasted like theirs."

Folks came out in the rain to say goodbye to a place that held some tasty childhood memories.

Demolition crews on North Pennsylvania Avenue were taking down the building that once held the Silver Top, a popular spot for hungry families in the 1960s.

Last year when fire swept through the place, a new owner was in the process of bringing the Silver Top back to the space which was later made into a pizza shop.

At the time, Michael Dennis told Newswatch 16, "It is terrible. I can't believe we worked this hard, all this time, just waiting, and this happens."

But in the months since that fire, neighbors began to worry that the damaged building might present a dangerous temptation to local kids.

"I always thought, 'What if one of them gets hurt?' So I am glad to see it come down," Lisa Fletcher said.

Still her husband Ken will never forget the ice cream that tasted like heaven to a 5 year old.

"My mother gave me a dime, I was going to get an ice cream and they were closed, so I sat by the store. I thought the dime was no good, so I threw it in the sewer," he laughed.
