POTTSVILLE -- The forecast for rain has cancelled an Independence Day parade that was scheduled for Pottsville.

It's the second time this has happened this year.

Pottsville's St. Patrick's Parade was also cancelled because of the weather.

The city administrator says it's been more than 10 years since the last time Pottsville had to cancel its Fourth of July Parade. He also says he doesn't even think there has ever been a time when both the St. Patrick's Parade and Independence Day Parade were called off.

Mother Nature was just not on Pottsville's side this year.

"You can control so much, but that's the only thing that's out of our control. Unfortunately we have to roll with the punches," said Pottsville city administrator Thomas Palamar.

Pottsville city administrators have called off the annual Fourth of July parade which usually travels down Progress Street.

The fireworks which are set off at Nativity High School's field are postponed until July 17.

Some say rain in the forecast shouldn't stop the show.

"I think they should have it rain or shine," said Terry Stufflet of Hamburg.

Even through the parade is canceled and the fireworks are postponed, there is one event that's still going on this weekend. It's called the Celebration at the Station.

"There will still be vendors down at Union Station. There will still be some entertainment, not to the extent it would have been before."

Linda Kachelries remembers going to all sorts of parades when she was growing up in Pottsville, no matter the weather.

"The Winter Carnival parade, we all froze our butts off going to, it was cold, but everyone stood out in the freezing cold to watch the winter carnival parade."

This is also the first year many people can remember that the Fourth of July and St. Patrick's Day Parade were rained out.

Now, officials are trying to make it up to the city.

"So we're trying to put our thinking caps back on and get back to the drawing board and do something nice for the community on the 17th as well."

Pottsville Positive, the group in charge of the fireworks, says it will keep the public posted on any future events.
