LEHIGHTON -- Work is underway on a brand new athletic stadium for the Lehighton Area School District.

Crews are laying the groundwork for the bleachers as an official groundbreaking took place.

"It's a long time coming. I graduated from Lehighton in the new school there in '94 and it was supposed to be done then. It's 20 plus years in the making," said Jason Muffley, the vice president of the Lehighton Athletic Booster Club

The new $6.5 million facility will be home turf for football, field hockey, soccer, and other outdoor events.

"It's going to help out parents and kids knowing where all of the events are. Right now we are a little scattered where things are hosted. Now everything will be held here at a central location," said athletic director Kyle Spotts.

At the old football field, you couldn't even sit in the last three rows of the bleachers and the press box seated only four people.

Field hockey games were played at another location without stadium lights

"We had to schedule it, like, almost right after school. it was almost unfair because we didn't have a lot of time to get ready and to get warmed up," said senior field hockey player Emma Sawyer.

The new stadium isn't scheduled to be complete until November of this year which means all fall sports will have one more season on the old field. Many seniors have mixed emotions about that.

"It's not as bad as you think it would be, but we could be graduating on it so that's really exciting for us."

The project is still months from being ready to host the Lehighton Indians, but it's already created quite a buzz.

"Just excited that our kids are going to get to benefit from it."
