NANTICOKE -- First responders in Nanticoke have a lot to celebrate over the next few days. The area is hosting a firemen's convention, as well as a milestone of its own fire departments.

The tables are set, the cake is iced, and the basket raffles are ready for the taking.

"Honey, we've been planning for two years! Everything's planned!"

Now Linda Prushinkski of the Honey Pot Fire Company in Nanticoke is just waiting for a rush of first responders to arrive to the 112th annual Six County Fireman's Convention.

"We're a brotherhood, we're always together and we just try to do everything we can!" Prushinski said.

The convention brings together more than 100 first responders from Lackawanna, Luzerne, Columbia, Montour, Schuylkill and Northumberland Counties. This year, the focus is on recruiting new volunteers.

"It used to be a family thing, you know, your father was a firefighter and you went up," said Deanna Force of Danville.

Force says volunteering in a local fire department is one of the best choices she's ever made.

"The benefits, when you go home, you can say I helped somebody with a fire, I helped pull someone from a burning car."

The convention isn't just benefiting firefighters, but also businesses in the West Nanticoke area.

"Today we were really busy."

Shannon Shemanski is a server at Stookey's Famous Barbeque in West Nanticoke. After seeing the response from the firefighter convention, she wants more conventions to happen in the area.

"It brought in more people and they were just very polite and I hope they come again."

The Six County Fireman's association hopes the convention helps other local businesses, too. After all, celebrating the association's 112 years is important to these men and women and to the communities they serve.

"Most of the things this week are to just have a great time," added Prushinski.

The convention ends Saturday with a parade that starts at Greater Nanticoke Area High School in Nanticoke at 2 p.m.
