TAMAQUA -- Hundreds of people showed up for a special tribute Wednesday night for a teacher from Schuylkill County who died earlier in the week.

A candlelight vigil was held at the Tamaqua Area High School sports complex for Thelma Urban.

It was held to honor the ways the language arts teacher touched many lives during her career at the school. She was considered a "champion for the underdogs."

Urban had a heart attack earlier this month. She leaves behind a husband and two children.

"For the last 20 years, I have been the luckiest of all and more recently, our son Sean and our daughter Violet have been really lucky too. Because every day she taught us what's important in life; laughing, adventure, and loving each other," said her husband Mike.

"I'm going to miss not having her down the hall from me when I need her. I'm going to miss her spirit and all she had to offer. I'm going to miss my friend," said a fellow teacher, Sherri Gerber.

A book of stories is planned for Mrs. Urban's children so they know what she meant to so many people.
