SOUTH MONTROSE -- Montrose Beer and Deli along Route 29 in South Montrose is a popular place in part of Susquehanna County.

Whether people are there to fuel up or pick up lunch, you can almost always find customers at this family business.

Tuesday night, just before 10 p.m. an unwelcome customer came into the store demanding money. Police say the male showed a pistol and demanded all the money from the cash register. Investigators say he got away with more than $1,000.

Employees say it's a setback to the family business.

"That could be like the profits for the day. You know what I mean?" employee Jaime Brace said.

Brace has worked at the store since the early 1990s and says something like this has never happened.

"All I can think of is somebody needed drug money because there's a lot of drugs going around these days," Brace said.

Surveillance pictures show the robber was wearing a blue hoodie, blue jeans with a black bandanna covering his face.

Employees say a small SUV or possibly a dark-colored Jeep Liberty fled the scene after being parked on the side of the building.

Investigators say the vehicle fled south on Route 29 toward Tunkhannock.

While fleeing the scene, police say the suspects struck a vehicle that was traveling north. Investigators say the SUV fled the crash at a high rate of speed.

"You feel  safe here. It's a quiet little country town. For something like this to happen, it makes you kind of wonder what's going on you know? It's scary, really," Stanley Wood said.

Brace says the whole situation is upsetting.

She has a message for the man who pointed a gun at her co-worker.

"Get a job. Don't put somebody else's life at risk so that you can get high or do whatever you're doing. You know, whatever you needed your money for there's obviously somebody else whose life is more important that doing whatever you needed to do last night," Brace said.

Anyone with information regarding this robbery should contract state police at Gibson.
