BELTZVILLE STATE PARK -- On the first full day of summer, you'll find a lot of people at Beltzville State Park in Carbon County.

Whether they're splashing around in the water or catching a few rays on the sand, many people enjoy what the park has to offer.

"It's beautiful to just sit here and look at it, and I like freshwater," Margaret Gemmell of Kresgeville said.

In an effort to improve the park, park officials are now planning to work with Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation.

The non-profit organization helps form groups that maintain state parks in Pennsylvania.

"The objective is to gauge the interest of the public and find out how the park can help facilitate public need through a friends group," said Beltzville State Park Manager Devin Buzard.

There are 38 parks in Pennsylvania that have a friends group.

Each park does different things like host special events, raise money or just volunteer.

According to a news release by Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation, in 2014 volunteers raised over $390,000, hosted 133 special events and volunteered over 44,000 hours on trails, campgrounds and picnic areas.

"They also do things like trail cleanups and they help maintain the structures at the park occasionally as well," Buzard said.

Dave Comisac of Tamaqua likes the idea of a volunteer group.

He already has suggestions on how the park can be improved.

"I'm looking for a path all the way around the dam. That's what I would like. You know, so you can walk all the way around. I think that would be pretty cool," Comisac said.

Margaret Gemmell of Kresgeville spent the afternoon relaxing at the beach. She likes the idea of a friends group.

"I think it would be really good. I think it would be a great idea," Gemmell said.

Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation scheduled a meeting at the Environmental Interpretation Center at the park on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Anyone who is looking for more information can call the park office at (61) 377-0045.
