CARBONDALE -- Parents taking their children to a playground in Lackawanna County Thursday morning were shocked by what they found: vulgar and racist messages painted all over Russell Park in Carbondale.

There is pink spray paint all over the playground at Russell Park in Carbondale. Someone painted vulgar words and images and racist slurs on the equipment sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

A mother and her small child found the vandalism in the morning. Russell Park was all but empty for the rest of the day.

There were similar things painted all over the band shell at the park. But there, the Carbondale DPW was quick to put on a new coat of paint.

DPW workers told Newswatch 16 that the band shell needed fresh paint and some cosmetic work anyway. It did not ease any of their frustrations though. There is still a lot to clean up.

"I think it's really disrespectful what these kids will do. This is a children's park. It's stupid anymore what people do," said Brody Kelly of Carbondale.

Several neighbors told Newswatch 16 teens often hang out at the park late at night. They weren't surprised by vandalism, but some of the messages  crossed the line.

"I think it's disrespectful what people do these days, like grow up, it's a kids park let them have fun you don't have to ruin their stuff," added Wyatt Holzman of Greenfield Township.

Carbondale DPW workers plan to power wash the playground, they may have to paint over the mess. Either way, they want it cleaned up as soon as possible.
