MORELAND TOWNSHIP -- Marian and Lewis Harman were hopeful when they allowed Range Resources, a gas company from Texas, to rent land and drill on their farm near Hughesville.
When we first met the couple in October they told us the gas company drilled but never extracted any gas.
"It's just kind of an eye sore when you can't do anything with it," said Marian Harman from Moreland Township.
We stopped by again, but not much has changed since our last visit.
"No, it's just sitting there. It's just sitting there. It hasn't been used any more since the last time I talked to you,” said Harman.
According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the gas company now owes the state nearly $9 million in fines. The DEP says the gas company has not fixed the faulty cement gas well that has been polluting groundwater, including people’s well water, with methane gas.
The Harmans say about two years ago neighbors who live on one side of their well pad began to complain about contaminated water. People who live on the other side of the well pad had no issues.
"It does kind of make you wonder when you hear everyone having water problems. I know on the other side of town too people have had water issues so yea it is a concern,” said Ronnie Cranmer from Moreland Township.
According to DEP at least five homes have had methane systems installed.
"We believe we've complied with DEP's requests and while we have a disagreement about this situation ... We are confident in the mechanical integrity of the well and we are equally confident... The environment and community are not at risk,” said Range Resources Corporation.
"What would you rather be doing with the land? I would be crop farming it like we used to," Lewis Harman from Moreland Township.
