WILKES-BARRE---The inside of the gym at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes-Barre was festooned with balloons Friday afternoon as the Lady Royals celebrated their state championship.

They beat Deer Lakes 10 to 5 for the class AA title at Penn State for the school's first ever softball state championship.

"I was excited, I couldn't believe that we went all the way like that. We must be pretty good around here, the Wyoming Valley conference is a very talented organization," said Kristen Coffay, a pitcher for the Lady Royals.

"Our area is really hard working and we have really tough conferences," agreed fellow pitcher Morgan Bienkowski.

The Abington Heights Comets baseball team of Lackawanna County also played for a state title at Penn State.

The team lost 7 to 5 to Knoch High School in the PIAA class AAA championship.

After the game, some of the players, carrying a plaque, threw gowns over their uniforms and graduated.

The Wyoming Valley West baseball team of Luzerne County was at State College, too, for the class AAAA state championship game.

"I'll tell you, our Wyoming Valley West conference is well represented down there as well as District 2. We're really making a name for ourselves for all of our state titles, so it's a big accomplishment for us. We're very proud of our conference and our district," said Holy Redeemer Athletic Director J.P. Aquilina.

In total, three talented teams from Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties represented at state championship games.

"And then you had Nanticoke that made it to the semi-finals so kids are doing good, you know? They're representing the area and you can't ask for better than that," said Lady Royals Coach Jerry Paulukonis.
