EDWARDSVILLE -- The second annual pierogi festival got underway Friday in Edwardsville.
The line outside Just R Pierogies stand on Main Street in Edwardsville may not look long now but according to owners that will change. They expect to have lines wrapped around the corner during the second annual pierogi festival.
"We bring about 200 and some dozen down and we have to make another run in the afternoon," said Rose Marie Czock.
Last year, Czock and her husband won a trophy for best pierogies. They also sold nearly 8,000 last year. This year they hope to double that.
"It's all hand pinched, we've got to fill freezers, we've got to make a run home while people bring more pierogies in later."
"It's great. It's all about the ethnic tradition of the area. I come from a couple hours away but this is a thing our country is losing ethnicity where everyone gets together, has a good time and it's all about enjoying the community," said Eric Swarkley from Hershey.
The nice part about pierogi fest is that you're not only going to get the traditional potato pierogi. You're going to get a variety of different kinds. At RK Mobile Foods, they have an apple cinnamon pierogi, covered in whipped cream.
"It's nice for the people, give them something else that they can go with," said owner Matthew Heller.
Heller is based in Stroudsburg and says he's thrilled to show off his cuisine to people in Luzerne County.
"It's just another festival bringing people here to Edwardsville. Edwardsville is a nice town."
Organizers say the number of vendors and stands doubled since the festival's debut last year.
The Edwardsville Pierogi Festival runs through Saturday when there will be a parade and awards.
