HARRISBURG -- On Monday afternoon, state senators rejected the governor's pick for state police commissioner.

Col. Marcus Brown has been a controversial figure since being nominated.

State senators voted down Col. Brown by a vote of 26 to 22.

On Monday morning, the governor asked state lawmakers to recall his nomination of Brown as state police commissioner.

Wolf wanted more time for discussions with lawmakers.

"We consider nominees both Democrats and Republicans and we look at the merits, look at the individual's record, look at their experience and that's what we tried to get across today. That that's what we should be doing. and that's not what they've done," said Sen. Jay Costa,(D) Allegheny County.

Brown has been at the center of controversy since being nominated. He has been criticized for wearing a state police uniform, despite never graduating from the state police academy.

When signs criticizing him were put up in his neighborhood, Brown was caught on camera removing them.

Authorities investigated but did not file charges.

Newswatch 16 contacted Governor Wolf's office. A spokesman there told us the governor is "disappointed" the senate did not approve his recall, but Governor Wolf still has the utmost confidence in Col. Brown who will remain the acting state police commissioner.
