COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP -- Authorities in Monroe County say a girlfriend and boyfriend tried to extort $100,000 from a wealthy physician.
According to court papers, Mari-Lyn Normando, 24, of Effort got into a relationship with the doctor. Normando told the doctor she was pregnant with his child. The doctor then received a threatening email from a "John Doe" demanding cash. In the email, "John Doe" claimed to have video evidence of the doctor committing a crime and threatened to release the video if the doctor did not pay $100,000.
He told authorities, who then set up a sting operation. According to investigators, Normando and her boyfriend, Brandon Hill, 34, of Tobyhanna, showed up at a drop point in Monroe County.
When detectives tried to arrest Hill, he ran into the woods but was quickly caught.
The two face extortion charges.
