MOSCOW -- Some growth at a library in Lackawanna County means an expansion that is sprouting from the ground.

It's a construction of sorts at the expansion to the North Pocono Public Library, but there's more planting than building in the new addition in Moscow.  A community garden is another example of how a library is more than just books.

"It's the center of the community. We provide information. We provide a place for the community to interact and to learn all in one," said library director Susan Jeffery.

The latest learning and interacting comes in the form of plants.

This is different from community gardens where people have their own plot and plant their own vegetables. This is a team effort to help gardeners learn from each other, and teach, too.

"It's a different spin on the community garden project. It's more of a learning and giving garden and I love that idea," said volunteer Rich Rava.

Rich Rava and Tom Coleman are green thumb volunteers.

"Just amazing to me to just watch everyone contribute towards it, their time, their materials, their labors. It's just a wonderful, wonderful project that brings the community together," added volunteer Tom Coleman.

Part of the garden is empty now, but kids are going to be part of this one. Boys and girls are going to planting there soon, then watching them grow all summer long, and learning, too.

"They're going to learn where their food comes from. That's a real important component for good nutrition and good life skills," said Jeffery.

The garden will be part of summer reading programs.

Most of the produce that comes at harvest time will go to those in need.

"The giving part at the end is really the nicest portion of it. We're going to give a good portion of these vegetables to the local food pantry," said Rava.

That comes after the community gets to watch all this and their library grow.
