BLOOMSBURG -- A man found guilty of stabbing and killing his friend was sentenced Wednesday morning in Columbia County.

Brett Woodside was sentenced Wednesday morning for stabbing to death someone he called his best friend.

The crime happened almost two years ago.

The victim's family says they feel justice was served, but they do not forgive Woodside.

Woodside was sentenced to spend 10 to 20 years in prison for the stabbing death of Brandon Burns.

It happened in July of 2013. State police say Woodside and Burns were hanging out with two women at Woodside's house near Bloomsburg.

The two childhood friends got into a fight and Woodside stabbed Burns to death.

"With him being a best friend, it makes the impact even harder."

Tyler Burns is Brandon's younger brother and spoke on behalf of his family. He says his brother left behind a young son and it is hard for his family to cope.

"We can't just pick up our phones and call him and that just brings us down, but we always pick ourselves back up."

In March, a jury found Woodside guilty of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault.

At the sentencing, Burns' mother was emotional. She told the judge, "I'll never again get the chance to hear him say, 'I love you, momma.'"

Woodside apologized to the family, saying, "for all the pain I've caused all of you, I wish I could take it back."

The family of Brandon Burns says they are pleased with the sentence.

"People asked me what I wanted and I got what I wanted. It doesn't matter how long you give him though, it's never going to change the fact. But as far as justice, I believe it was served," Tyler Burns said.

Members of Brett Woodside's family did not want to talk on camera.

Woodside has been locked up since the stabbing. That time served will go toward his sentence of 10 to 20 years.
