TUNKHANNOCK -- An extra long weekend came to an end for students in a Wyoming County school district.

The teachers strike in Tunkhannock Area lasted all of one day.

Teachers walked off the job Friday, upset a contract deal they thought they had with the school board fell through. The school board voted down the proposal the night before.

The teachers had been without a contract for three years.

The school board and superintendent released a statement during the strike, urging the teachers union to go back to the bargaining table.

Due to calendar regulations put in by the state which requires 180 days of education before June 15,  the teachers were forced back to work after a one-day strike.

According to the Tunkhannock Area School District website, seniors graduate June 12, with the last day for underclassmen as June 15.
