EAST UNION TOWNSHIP -- The speed limit on Route 339 in East Union Township is 40 miles per hour. Chances are, you aren't driving that fast because you're probably dodging potholes and cracks.

People who travel the road every day said it's becoming unbearable.

"The road is awful. It's terrible to drive on. There's some spots you actually have to go to the other side of the road even to get across, especially with a small car," said Dylan Baranowsky of East Union Township.

A sign on Route 339 warns people of a windy road, but drivers said it's a bumpy one, too. It's damaging their cars and costing them money.

"I've popped two tires and I've broke two rims just driving on the road," said Baranowsky.

If you can escape the potholes, there's also the falling guide rails and the cracking asphalt. People said this road has been like this for years.

Route 339 is a state road, which means PennDOT is in charge of fixing it up.

East Union Township Road Master Jon Dettery said he gets people calling all the time about the crumbling road and he can't do a thing about it.

"If it was a township road, me and the other two board members would gladly stick money in the road. But being it's a state road, we can't stick East Union Township tax dollars into that state road."

PennDOT officials said the road serves about 2,000 drivers a day.

The last time it was paved was between 1989 and 1991. It was oil and chipped back in 2006.

"I hope at some point they repave it. It really needs to be done. Not tar and chip, tar and chip does nothing and it makes everything worse," said Baranowsky.

PennDOT officials said Route 339 isn't on a list to be resurfaced until at least 2017 and 2018.

However, that could all change if funding for that project needs to go to an emergency instead.
