RYAN TOWNSHIP -- As the "unofficial kickoff to summer," Memorial Day weekend usually brings a big crowd to Locust Lake State Park and this year is no different.

The park in Schuylkill County has almost 300 campsites and almost all of them were packed for the holiday weekend.

Plus, there's a pretty nice view.

"Oh, it's so peaceful and quiet," said Dorothy Haldeman of Myerstown.

The Pucklavage's from Hometown have spent the past 30 Memorial Days camping at Locust Lake.

Sonia Pucklavage said it gets busy, but that's part of the fun.

"There's a lot of people around and everybody is friendly. You talk to each other. The dogs are usually the center of attention."

There is a rule around the campfire for the Pucklavage family bring your stories, not your phones.

"Just enjoying each other talking, without the phones, put the phones on silent," said Sonia Pucklavage.

Campers said that hanging out by the campfire is reason enough to come back, year after year, but when it's a nice weekend you can't beat the lake.

"We're going kayaking. We enjoy going kayaking," said Haldeman.

As the holiday weekend wrapped up, many families who came to camp packed up.

Experienced campers, like Nichelle Pucklavage, said camping for Memorial Day is great, but staying for the entire week is even better.

"You get to relax for the entire week. You don't want to worry about just getting unpacked and then packing up after three days, you get to relax and enjoy your campsite for a while," said Pucklavage.
