STROUDSBURG -- Officials in Stroudsburg say organizers of a Civil War ceremony planned for Sunday will be allowed to fire blanks in salute to fallen soldiers from Monroe County.

The gun salute had become a hot topic after the borough solicitor had advised that the salute would violate a local ordinance.

People we met in Stroudsburg seemed perplexed by the situation.

Denisha Mitchell said, "Wow, that is all I have, wow, you would think they would OK it just for this special occasion because it is Memorial Day weekend."

By lunchtime on Thursday, however, local officials were looking for a loophole that would allow the salute to go forward.

Council President Kim Diddio said after a number of phone calls, a solution was found.

She said, "We can always choose not to enforce that ordinance on that particular day."

Stroudsburg Borough Manager Cathryn Thomas tells Newswatch 16 that at the next council meeting, officials will begin taking steps to change the ordinance.

Mitchell says that is good news.

"Now they can celebrate it the way it should have been without all the confusion," she said.
