LEHMAN TOWNSHIP -- A science lesson came to life in Luzerne County.

Eighth graders from Wyoming Valley West checked out plant and wildlife at the Lehman Sanctuary near Shavertown.

The owner of the sanctuary, Chris Miller, says it’s important for students to learn the importance of the environment.

"If kids don't learn how to respect, understand, and preserve the natural world then it doesn't bode well for our planet as they get older," Miller said.

Some of the wildlife that call the sanctuary in Luzerne County home include the rare four-toed salamander, cabbage white butterfly, and great blue heron.
