TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP -- A runner who collapsed and suffered a heart attack Sunday during the Run for the Red marathon in the Poconos is recovering thanks to quick work by police officers, emergency personnel, and bystanders.

Organizers tell us that a 50-year-old man from New Jersey collapsed right after mile 21.

Stroud Area Regional Police Officer Stephen Hettel and others gave that runner, John Burrows, CPR for about 8 minutes.

Officer Hettel said they also used an AED machine that was inside a police car.

"It saved his life. The doctors at the ER said if it wasn't for the AED, he probably would not have made it," Hettel said.

Burrows is being treated at Pocono Medical Center and is said to be doing well.
