SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A man was shot by troopers early Saturday morning following a standoff in Monroe County.

State police in Swiftwater said they were called to a house on Joseph Lane in Smithfield Township around 1:30 a.m. for an argument between Brandon Nuse, 20, and his family members. Troopers advised family members to get a mental evaluation for Nuse, who would not cooperate with troopers, but the family refused. Troopers then left.

Troopers were called back to the home about two and half hours later because Nuse was allegedly threatening his family members with a gun.

State police said troopers surrounded the home and told Nuse to come out, but he refused. They said Nuse eventually came outside and pointed a gun at troopers who then shot him in the torso.

Nuse was taken to a hospital. Investigators said he is expected to survive. No troopers were hurt.

State police said they expect to file charges against Nuse.
