POCONO RACEWAY -- Elephants are under the big top Wednesday night at Pocono Raceway. Before the main event, there was supposed to be a big splash to drum up some excitement.

The elephants were all ready to get hosed down by the fire department before the Cole Brothers Circus kicks off at Pocono Raceway. But instead the whole idea was a wash, thanks to Mother Nature.

"It was a little chilly for the bath, with the pressure of the water from the fire hose, it`s a little stronger than we`re used to and it would be a little too much for the girls this early in the morning," said Ringmaster Chris Conners of the Cole Brothers Circus.

So the elephants put on a show instead, playing the harmonica and doing tricks.

One mom brought her three kids -- who are home schooled -- to see the big show.

"She loves elephants. She`s seen them on TV, pictures, but she`s never seen them in real life, so we decided to come over," said Katie Achiron of Pocono Summit.

The rather dry event didn't upset these kids.

"I wouldn`t want to take a bath out here. It`s cold," said Cheyenne Moyer of Pocono Summit.

"Eh, I was OK with it. I got to pet the elephant," said Travis Achiron of Pocono Summit.

Even though the elephants didn`t get a bath, they`ll be all cleaned up before they head under the big top for the big show.

"We do wash the elephants every day before the show about 1 o`clock in the afternoon so we`re hoping it warms up by them," said Connors.

The circus is a fundraiser for the Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Company.

Shows are Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

"Yeah, we look forward to it. It`s a good community event. Everybody loves the circus," said Joe Folson of the Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Company.
