HAMILTON TOWNSHIP -- The Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Monroe County is taking care of a bear cub and a bald eagle right now, both animals that people rarely get to see up close.

The first bear cub of the season has arrived at the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education center near Stroudsburg.

The 5-month-old bear became separated from its mom.

"They're very sad when they're alone. They really need to be with other cubs, so hopefully if she can't be returned, I hate to say this but we will get at least one more cub to have her with," said Kathy Uhler of the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center.

Uhler says the center has also taken in a lot of eagles recently. One just arrived from northern Wayne County and can't fly.

"It's been through X-rays and some blood testing and we're still awaiting finding out what's going on with this big girl," said Uhler.

To continue caring for the eagle, the bear cub, and all of the animals at the wildlife center, they need your help.

The big event is called "May Day" to help all of these animals.

"May Day because it's the first of May, and May Day because we have an emergency. We are in the process of raising money to purchase this property so that the Poconos will have a forever wildlife center," said Uhler.

Randy Misko works at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort and helped coordinate the event, bringing food from Woodloch and other restaurants, live music, and silent auctions.

"She doesn't ask for anything, she does it just to give back and she enjoys doing what she's doing and how can you not get behind that?" said Misko.

Guests can begin stopping by at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the wildlife center on Cherry Drive, and help this place near Stroudsburg continue helping the animals.

"It's been a very positive amount of work, it's good, it's just we need some more help," said Uhler.

So far the wildlife center has raised $75,000 of its $300,000 goal.
