SCRANTON -- The nearly 100-year-old Harrison Avenue bridge has thousands of cars cross it everyday.
Starting Friday night, it will be restricted to heavy equipment.
The contractor warns, they will add a lot of noise in this neighborhood.
"It hasn't been bad yet, but from what I understand this weekend it may be a little, you know, worse than what it has been," said Richard Green, who lives right off of Harrison Avenue.
Green learned about the expected noise in a letter. The notes were written by the PennDOT hired contractor, Minicchi Construction, and passed out to some of the homes near the bridge.
PennDOT officials told Newswatch 16 that the bridge will be closed over the weekend because crews need to work in both lanes to shore it up to prepare for the new bridge construction.
Green said he will just play some music to block out the noise. He sees it as a good sign.
"It's good, it's good security, we were afraid the bridge was going down! We were number two there in the worst bridges. We're happy to see it done. It's going to take three years from what I understand. But, it will be nice when it's all finished," he said.
When you move from the area of the bridge where they are doing the work all the way to the other end, it does get a bit quieter. Houses on the south end of the bridge did not get a notice about noise.
But, people on both sides of the bridge will be affected by the bridge closure.
The Harrison Avenue bridge will stay open for emergency vehicles and pedestrians while the work is going on.
Drivers are expected to use the bridge again come Monday morning. The new one won't be finished for another few years.
