UPDATE April 26 -- PennDOT says the bridge reopened around 8 p.m. Sunday.

SCRANTON -- The busy Harrison Avenue Bridge, which sees tens of thousands of drivers each day, is now officially closed to traffic through the weekend here in Scranton.

PennDOT shut down the bridge around 10:30 Friday night as part of an $18 million bridge replacement project that is expected to last through 2017.

The nearly 100-year-old bridge connects the city`s Hill Section to the city`s south side and PennDOT says the bridge needs to be closed down because crews will be working in both lanes.

Emergency vehicles will still be allowed to use the bridge and PennDOT says pedestrians will still be able to cross over it.

The closure is expected to last until 6 o'clock Monday morning and for many drivers, they anticipate a lot of inconveniences this weekend.

“It's holding me back, I've got to go down to the hill, and the downtown, and then come back here again,” said David Pondang.

Others say this is a much needed replacement project and cannot wait to see the new bridge installed.

“It's good, its good security, we were afraid the bridge was going down!” said Richard Green. “We were number two there in the worst bridges. We're happy to see it done. It's going to take three years from what I understand. But, it will be nice when it's all finished.”

Once again the Harrison Avenue Bridge is expected to reopen to traffic Monday at 6 a.m.
