TANNERSVILLE -- The snow didn't stop one waterpark in the Poconos from showing off its stuff. Camelback's Aquatopia indoor waterpark opened its doors for an unveiling Thursday.
Kids spent the day splashing and sliding through the newest resort to open in the Poconos.
Students from Wallenpaupack South Elementary were special guests as Camelback unveiled its brand new indoor waterpark in Tannersville.
Fifth grader Nick Hussung says he's tried out the wave pool and the slides--thirteen different slides to be exact.
"Finding out that you’re getting to go to a waterpark on its grand opening before anyone else, that’s pretty amazing," Hussung said.
Officials say inside the waterpark it's always a balmy 84 degrees, which was exciting on a snowy spring day.
In addition to the 13 slides and pools, they also have the new Bombora Florider, just grab a board and attempt to surf if you’re feeling adventurous.
Camelback will be competing against three other indoor waterparks in the area, Split Rock Resort, Great Wolf, and the soon to open Kalahari. It’s something many in the Poconos are hoping works out long term.
"Hopefully they do, but yeah it is a lot of waterparks for the area. But it will bring in a lot of people, too," said Wallenpaupack South Elementary teacher Cathy Casseo.
The only other place with more indoor waterparks in one spot is the Dells in Wisconsin. It's called “the Waterpark Capital of the World.”
"I think we`re coming very close to being able to establish ourselves as the east coast center for waterparks as well," said Carl Wilgus with the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau.
Owners say they can't wait for guests to dive in and experience Aquatopia.
"It`s been a long time you know, over two years of planning and getting everything together and here it is and it`s just amazing. We`re excited to have the guests come," co-owner Tim Gantz said.
Aquatopia officially opens May 1.
