HAZLE TOWNSHIP- It might have been a windy and rainy Earth Day, but that didn't stop some people in Luzerne County from getting their hands dirty.

"What we're trying to do is reforest this whole area, get its natural beauty back and at the same time we want to build up riparian buffers to prevent water from coming and washing out the trail," Bob Skulsky of the Greater Hazleton Area Civic Partnership said.

Thanks to state money new trees are being planted on the Rails to Trails path just outside of Hazleton.

Kids from Hazleton Area School District helped with the planting on what once was an old mining area.

"It was good to get out of the classroom and celebrate Earth Day with hands-on activity where they could actually plant trees and see what it's like. When the trees grow, we'll come back and do the same, more work throughout the school year, this year and next," said Shawn Darraugh of Hazleton Area School District.

So far, several trees have already been planted along the Rails to Trails path. By the end of the week, they hope to have nearly 100 trees planted.

Employees from American Eagle Outfitters also rolled up their sleeves to help plant trees here in Hazle Township. The workers say it's a great way for them to give back to the community.

"We support each other regularly at work. It's just really cool for us to be able to come out here and support our city and do something that will benefit everybody in the long run," Jackie Covey of American Eagle Outfitters said.

The Greater Hazleton Area Civic Partnership plans to open this stretch of Rails to Trails near Ashmore Road next month.
