FAIRMOUNT TOWNSHIP -- Family members in Luzerne County are heartbroken after a fire destroyed their 100-year-old barn and everything inside it.
It started around noon at the place on Moss Road, near Sweet Valley.
That barn has been a part of the family for more than four generations. The family recently restored it, but on Tuesday, a fire ripped through it, torching it and antiques left inside.
A tractor is scorched, equipment is destroyed, and the barn that it all sat in is leveled after a fire near Ricketts Glen State Park ripped through it.
"The whole thing was engulfed in flames, there was nothing to save."
Elaine Moss says her sister and brother-in-law own the home and stayed in it on weekends. No family was inside the barn at the time of the fire. The barn has been in her family for decades and it brought a lot of memories to the family.
"It just makes me sick. It just makes me sad. But my philosophy is things can be replaced, people cannot," Moss said.
The family says it was a barn house 50 years ago. It's since been converted to storage space, but now all that's left is the milk house.
"The barn was so cute!" said Moss.
Crews had to fight flames in windy conditions. Heat from flames also blew onto the family's house, melting part of the siding.
It was also difficult for crews to get to the barn house, because the rain from overnight made the roads muddy. A tanker was stuck on its way there.
"This is tough. There's only little ponds and the problem today was, it's very wet, so the tankers and everything are sinking," said Fairmount Township Ambulance Captain Jill Shaw.
The family says they had insurance on the barn house, but there are some things they say cannot be replaced.
"This was my grandparents' farm and my sister and brother-in-law just bought it a couple years ago," said Moss.
"It's a shame. You don't like to see anything like this happen," Shaw added
No one was injured. Investigators are looking into what caused the fire.
