SUNBURY -- For most of the region, Saturday is the first day of trout season -- a rite of spring!

So on this day before, anglers all over our area are getting ready to cast their lines.

Muncy Creek was quiet on Friday but come Saturday, this area will most likely be filled with people casting their lines.

Trout fishing season starts at 8 a.m. sharp and we found a lot of people getting ready in Sunbury.

It was a revolving door of people at Southside Sports Bait and Tackle in Sunbury as anglers prepared for what many call one of their favorite days of the year -- the start of trout season.

"Everyone gets all restless at night and they get up early the next morning to go out. You meet friends. It's not so much catching, it's meeting friends," said Von Nichols of Herndon.

"It's great to get out after the winter, after the winter we had," said Tom Reich of Sunbury.

Many people spent the day before the start of trout season getting ready.

Store owner Ken Maurer says people came in for all kinds of items.

"Hip boots, fishing rods, reels, getting new line. We have a lot of people coming for bait, too."

The store is normally open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. but because of trout season, it's extending its hours this weekend. The store will stay open tonight until 11p.m. and open bright and early Saturday at 6 a.m.

"Fridays are usually pretty busy with people coming in for last minute things they forgot," added Maurer.

Tom Reich says he plans to fish with his son and picked up a last-minute item.

"Just two pound leader. That's all I needed yet, but you never know. You'll get there and remember you forgot something."

Von Nichols says the first day of trout season defines spring for him.

"The first day is always a social event. It doesn't matter where you go. It's always big crowds. After that it settles down and you can do some actual fishing.
