SHENANDOAH -- Now that spring is finally here, people in Schuylkill County want to enjoy the outdoors.
Instead, some people in Shenandoah are finding drug paraphernalia in borough parks.
People in the borough have been posting pictures on Facebook calling them the "Shenandoah Splinters."
Some people have found the drug items in alleyways and in parks, including Girard Park off Route 924.
"We found crack pipes. We found bath salts," said Kevin Simmons of Shenandoah.
Kasarah Miller of Shenandoah said she found, "Marijuana bags, needles, everything, pipes. It's ridiculous in this town."
People said they're not surprised to find things like beer cans or cigarette butts in the park, but they are surprised to find that people are doing illegal drugs where their kids are playing.
"I'm scared to even take my kids to the park because there's so much stuff laying around. And the needles laying around, there's too many dopies around here," said Simmons.
Rashawn Ward of Shenandoah takes his daughter to play in Girard park.
A few days ago, needles and synthetic marijuana packages were found near the playground.
Ward said you can't take your eyes off the kids for a minute because you don't want the kids stumbling across something that could hurt them.
"Stay on the jungle gym. This is the only spot where you can play. I don't even let my daughter go on the swings," said Ward.
Shenandoah police said they are working to fight the drugs in the borough.
Earlier this year, they made dozens of arrests in a drug bust and have confiscated more than 7,000 bags of heroin.
As for parents, they hope the kids aren't the ones to find what's left behind.
Ward said, "You just pray and hope that they're not even paying attention to that, that they're just paying attention to the fun of the park."
Shenandoah police said if you do find things like hypodermic needles, it's best not to clean them up yourself. Instead, you can call police and they'll pick them up.
