FREELAND -- Shopping for a deal in Luzerne County will soon be a bit easier.

Dollar General is opening a new store in Butler Township near Drums and moving another in Freeland, adding to the retailer's more than 11,000 locations across the country.

Those who shop at the store said bring on the deals.

"It helps everybody," said Dawn Borchick of Drums. "It's lower priced. It's beneficial."

Joseph Karlick of Freeland added, "In this area, because people don't make a lot of money, it's a great idea because they don't have to spend a lot of money."

The Dollar General in Freeland is moving from Centre Street to South Street. Now one of that store's biggest competitor, Family Dollar, is just a few hundred feet away.

"A lot of people in town are actually talking about that because they are right next to each other," said Karlick.

For the past 14 years, the Dollar General in Freeland was on Centre Street. That lease is now up, so the store is moving a few streets over, but not everyone is thrilled.

Karlick owns a business across from the old location and said that place will be empty, like many other storefronts in Freeland.

"Granted there's not a lot of parking on Centre Street, but it still did a lot of business. A lot of people around here who are elderly don't drive, so it was very convenient for them to have that storefront over there."

Construction is just starting at the new location off Route 309 near Drums.

Dawn Borchick lives in Drums, but she usually goes to the Dollar General on Diamond Avenue in Hazleton.

Soon, she'll have one close to home and close to work.

"I work right across the street, so that's why I stopped here," said Borchick.

The two new locations are just about five miles apart.

Dollar General management said that's the goal for the company adding, "We know convenience is a major factor in our customers` shopping decisions, and we generally aim to serve customers within a three to five mile radius, or 10 minute drive."

The company said the Freeland store should be open by late May and the other Dollar General store in Butler Township could open its doors by June.
