TAMAQUA -- Security cameras like the ones in Tamaqua have been keeping an eye on the streets for the last five years.
There are 10 of them throughout the borough being monitored by the police department.
In the coming months, residents may see more security cameras popping up around Tamaqua.
"It gives us a better security downtown and wherever these cameras are located. It gives everybody a better sense of security," said Linda Yulanavage, executive director of Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce.
For that reason, the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce and police want to take the security system to the next level.
Businesses now have the opportunity to link their security systems to the borough's. For a monthly monitoring fee, businesses could have the police department keeping an eye on their stores.
"I think it's a good idea. It keeps crime down. It gives the police something to work with, especially mischievous things like vandalism," Avrum Gold of New Ringgold said.
Local businesses are excited to help make the security system bigger and more effective.
"Absolutely, absolutely. I think it's a great thing," Tom Banditelli said.
Banditelli is the owner of Tom's Auto & Marine in Tamaqua. He's had a security system for the last 10 years and says it's helped him in the past. He likes the idea of having the police keep tabs on his security system, too.
"I can monitor my camera system on my phone and also on my computer no matter where I am. But to have the police able to monitor my cameras is a definite plus," Banditelli said.
Businesses that are interested in joining the borough's security system can call the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce.
