HANOVER TOWNSHIP -- Officials say a man from Wilkes-Barre died, after he was hit while crossing the street near Ashley. The driver did not stop.

Police in Hanover Township are still looking for the silver jeep that witnesses say struck and killed a man on Hazle Street just after 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Kate Moore still can't believe what she saw happen late Friday night in front of her home on Hazle Street.

"I heard the thump outside, I thought oh my gosh my car is getting hit, that is when I see the man laying in the road," said Moore.

Officials say Larry Herbert, 61, was crossing the street outside Claire's Bar when someone driving a silver Jeep Cherokee hit him and kept on going.

People inside the bar say that the victim was especially polite and would shake the bartenders hand before leaving. They added that he was crossing the street to wait for a ride when he was hit.

Moore says she could hear the victim's friend encouraging him to hang on.

"The one woman kept talking to him, making sure he had a pulse, saying it's going to be okay Larry," add Moore.

The Luzerne County Coroner says the man, who was from Wilkes-Barre, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Hanover Township Police are now looking for the driver and the jeep.

Brad Suprum of Ashley said, "They should have pulled over called the cops, and reported it, because now they are getting in more trouble for not reporting what they did."

People we spoke with in the area say Hazle Street can be tricky to navigate on foot

Andrea Marello, of Hanover Township, keeps a close eye when her grand kids play outside because of the constant traffic. She too heard the man being struck Friday night.

"It's so sad, I was thinking about that last night, I feel bad for the family especially on the holiday weekend," said Marello.

There is no word of any arrests. Police are still looking for the driver and the vehicle which is believed to be a silver Jeep Cherokee.

An autopsy is scheduled Monday morning on the victim of the deadly hit and run in Luzerne County.
