SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP -- The clubs are loaded up in the golf carts and folks are finally able to hit the greens at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort along the Delaware River.

Robin Wolfe of Middle Smithfield Township has been watching the weather, anxious for this day to come.

"It`s just been such a long cold winter to get back out, get out, walk around, get some exercise, and hang out with our friends," Wolfe said.

She's not the only one. The Shawnee Inn says more than 75 people teed off Friday on the course.

"People are excited to be out, it`s been a long cold winter, so people are just excited to go out and play golf," said Joe Manley, PGA Director of Golf.

Len Schlosberg of Middle Smithfield Township has been golfing this course for nearly 30 years. He says it's still by far his favorite.

"Every time you`re out there it`s a little different.  There`s 27 holes, and each is different, there`s a different type of challenge," Schlosberg said.

To open the course, Shawnee had to wait until part of the Delaware River thawed to install a bridge, because without it, you can`t get to 24 of their 27 holes.

Some of the course still is spotted with some stubborn snow piles.

"Snow is actually very good for the grass. We still have patches of snow out there, but the golf course itself is very playable and in very good condition," said Manley.

Employees tell us this opening is right on par, but some say they remember much earlier golfing seasons.

"Three years ago we were out on St. Patty`s Day. It was 75 degrees. We were out there dancing," Wolfe said.

Now that the course is open you can enjoy the scenic fairways for only $25 mid-week and $35 on weekends for a limited time.
